The steamship set off precisely on time. The three initials before its name -- RMS, for Royal Mail Steamer -- indicated that it was carrying mail. Before casting off, the captain had revealed he intended to go for the famous Blue Riband, awarded for the fastest Atlantic crossing. He wouldn't have time to open his trunks, so had decided to take with him just the clothing he would need and a few personal effects, along with his dress uniform for dinners. The roomy Steamer Bag was the obvious choice. A young woman was sitting opposite him on a velvet-covered seat in the first-class lounge. she gazed at him, then smiled...
The Steamer Bag was created in 1901 to meet the need for a spare, versatile piece of luggage. The very first soft bag, it was originally designed to be slipped into one of the compartments of a trunk.
