Journey (comp tickets series)

>> Tuesday, March 17

That JOURNEY concert was quite an experience. The SM Mall of Asia was packed last Saturday with people who knew the lyrics to most of the iconic band's songs. While I wasn't one of them, my husband knew the words to at least four full songs by heart (i.e., Don't Stop Believin', Faithfully, Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), Open Arms, etc). Needless to say, we had a blast.
~
Initially, I was even hesitant to watch the show because I feared it would be too crowded. It was crowded, alright-- but everybody remained orderly, the place brimmed with positive energy. We were among well-behaved fans with what appeared to be delicious looking beer on hand. We didn't drink though (because we don't). I did have some dried mangoes with me, thinking I'd need them to keep me occupied.
~
Turns out I didn't really need the diversion. Arnel Pineda was awesome and upbeat, watching him live made me proud to be sharing the title of "Filipino" with him. The dude breathes talent!
~
We fare thee well, Steve Perry. We are aware that Arnel Pineda can never replace you but does he really need to? We think not.
~
Arnel Pineda's no Steve Perry but Steve Perry's no Arnel Pineda either.
~
SP or AP? Journey rocks with either one of them there... and I'm not even a fan!
~
...Just a fortunate kibitzer with complimentary tickets :)

Natalie Cole (comp tickets series)

The show had started when we entered the Araneta Coliseum. There she stood, the stately Ms. Natalie Cole (seemingly weakened by her life-threatening bout with Hepatitis C just last year), sternly asking members of her paying audience to not record any part of the evening's concert. She repeated herself several times throughout the first half of her performance. Several times in between songs. The lady's voice was beautiful, I can still hear her so clearly, saying "stop recording the show, you know that's not allowed..." followed by "I don't know how to make you stop. You up there! you can't do that, you know who you are...stop recording...Stop. It."
~
I so wish this third world country's concert-watching populace/video pirates (--this seemed to be the notion) had STOPPED RECORDING sooner (if they were recording at all) so the rest of us had the chance to enjoy Ms. Cole's timeless classics and not just her ill-timed comments. Fade out.
~
Fade in to post-mortem fingers quietly typing:
Answering crass with class might have allowed us an awesome night with the globally acclaimed star. Instead, we got to listen to beautifully written songs in between short sermons on how not to act like under-educated and overly abusive fans during big-name concerts. Simply (& not sadly) put, "class" went m.i.a. that lovely evening.

~
It was a lovely evening, just the same. We had complimentary tickets.

We have all her Cd's. They're packed with unforgettables that could effectively dim any forgettable live experience.

Happy Moo Year!

>> Friday, January 30

I found these cute pins at a mall in Ortigas first week of January and decided I should get a few pieces to be used as giveaways for a new year party held at my place early this month. Less than half the invited guests arrived so I'm stuck with a few more "ox' pins to spare. They're crazy cute and super small, I figured I'd post pictures of them here. I thought they'd look cuter wrapped in thin black paper... I call them "black dim sum" heheh... They're now "official" souvenir pins handed to friends who visit us at home :)

To all my Chinese-Filipino friends, happy year of the Ox! (better late than never, right? ;) Long live Chinese food!!!
Salt&Pepper Squid, Garlic Fish Fillet, Chicken Mami and Hot Prawn Salad ...Forever! heheh

Eco-friendly Electronic Ad debuts in NY

>> Thursday, January 15

A solar and wind-powered billboard recently debuted in Times Square, making it the glitzy intersection's first eco-friendly electronic ad. A first for New York, this nature-powered 126' X 47', 35,000-pound sign advertising Ricoh Americas Corp is only the third in the world. The other two are Pacific Gas & Electric’s in San Francisco and Ricoh’s original eco billboard in Tokyo.

Powered by 16 wind turbines and 64 solar panels, the sign is expected to save $12,000 to $15,000 per month in electricity costs.

Ricoh, an office equipment and document storage supplier, estimates the sign will also keep 18 tons of carbon out of the environment. The billboard will be lit by floodlights rather than light-emitting diodes. It won't have a backup generator, so it could go dark during a long period with little wind or sun. Ricoh officials claim, however, that the sign's turbines will probably be able to keep the billboard lit even after four days without breezes or bright sun.
Neat, right?
Well, back to home base. We have all the sun (& wind) in the Philippines. Eco-friendly ads will remain lit here for...ever.

An Evening in December with Sitti

>> Thursday, December 18

Love the Sitti Christmas album! My friends and I overdosed on Christmas hymns last night. It's one thing to listen to the CD and another to watch the songs done live, though.

Good thing Sitti went through a lot of interesting costume changes. My friend's officemate described her best: She's easy on the eyes. And ears.

Richard Poon was a welcome addition to the program.
He & Christian Bautista oozed with holiday charm. The audience
seemed happy.

Looking forward to the next Sitti single / album coming out.
Hope she considers a valentine concert too...
My dad loves her! The lady sure knows how to bossa nova.

Twilight The Movie

>> Wednesday, November 26

I saw Twilight Tuesday night at a cinema packed with "Twilighters", I believe. It was apparent from the time Robert Pattinson's (Edward, lead vampire) character was introduced. His family's super pale-faced cafeteria entrance generated a lot of "oohs" and "aahhs" from the audience...it was hard to ignore.

It's a modern day love story between a vampire and a human. A teen flick, if I might say so, with an anatomy resembling numerous teen cult classics that've come before it. No elements were left out: School cafeteria gossips and groupings, parking lot stare downs, prom night preps and date hunts, friends getting together by the beach, class field trips, (cool) family baseball game time, boyfriend entering through the bedroom window, teenage angst caused by parents' divorce, head of police for a dad, did I mention prom night...?

Have you seen Pretty in Pink? How about Underworld? Hybridize those two together, add a hint of Addams Family and any movie with a father and "hurting" daughter tandem and you've got Twilight. I haven't read the book so I couldn't do a comparison... but overall it was OK, not spectacularly so, but it worked. It isn't as forgettable as some critics suggested it would be. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, actually. My fingers are crossed that Kristen Stewart's (Bella) acting will have improved by the time I go view the film again. A lot will disagree with me there. I, however, remain half an inch short of being a fan of her acting (only in that particular film, ya) hehehe

Now go see it with your friends (it's a good date movie too) and grab a CD of the sound track! I promise you'll love it. (Dear Freeloaders, do the record label a favor and BUY yourself a copy of the OST already ;p)

The evening of December 11th will see Jason Mraz perform in honour of Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari at the prestigious 15th Annual Peace Prize Concert being held in Oslo's Spektrum Arena. It is to be hosted by Michael Caine and Scarlett Johannson and will also feature performances from world renowned artists including Diana Ross, Robyn, Il Divo, Dierks Bentley, Julieta Venegas, Seun Kuti and Marit Larsen.

For more information on both the Concert and the Nobel Peace Prize, visit http://www.nobelpeaceprize.org/concert

_______________________________________________________________________

Jason's album We sing, we dance, we steal things. includes the charming & pleasantly lightweight tracks ''Live High'' and ''Make It Mine''. On repeat in my head is the playfully scatty ''I'm Yours''...

Watch out for his latest single ''Lucky,'' Mraz's duet with Colbie Caillat, which is sure to generate swoons well into the summer of next year. It is, afterall, an album fit for the beach :)

We sing, we dance, we steal things. is available under Atlantic Records / Warner Music Philippines.
